Here’s one to watch: Erik Morales, 21 years old and from the toughest neighborhood in Tijuana. At 28-0 with 22 knockouts, he is the WBC (and NABF) Super Bantamweight champion. His biggest fight was on September 6, 1997 when he stopped Daniel Zaragoza in the eleventh round to win the WBC crown. Zaragoza at the time was a 39-year-old champion appearing in his 22nd world title fight. Zaragoza won the title the previous January with a split decision victory over Wayne McCullough. At 122 pounds, Erik "el Terrible" Morales is one of Mexico's best boxing prospects and a favorite among the growing market of Hispanic boxing fans. He most recently defended his title last December 13 when John Lowey retired after the seventh round with a broken hand.
His opponent is Junior Jones, who goes by the moniker of "Poison." His record is 44-3 with 26 knockouts. Jones is trying to live down a fourth round knockout at the hands of Kennedy McKinney in 1997. His reputation is based on two wins over Marco Antonio Barerra, a former WBO junior featherweight champion called the "Baby-Faced Assassin." The first fight ended in a controversial ruling after Barerra’s corner entered the ring. Jones won a unanimous decision in the rematch. Junior Jones hails from Brooklyn, and occasionally prays with Evander Holyfield.
Erik Morales should win, but this could be a terrific fight. Both guys can punch – they have 48 knockouts between them, unusual at 122 pounds. They are fighting on Morales’s turf in Tijuana. Morales is the young comer, Jones the veteran with sometimes-questionable work habits. We’re going with el Terrible.
